Home Place Gardens offers affordable housing

In this week's video, learn about Home Place Gardens, which is being developed by the nonprofit HAND to bring more affordable housing to Hamilton County. Eight homes are available for low- and moderate-income people 55 and older, and there are two, three-bedroom homes that will be leased by families who have escaped domestic violence. It's a new partnership between HAND and Prevail.

Don't think there are many low-income families in Hamilton County? Think about. HAND has a waiting list of more than 250 people, and because of the scarcity of affordable land and properties, it will take years to meet current demand. At the most risk are seniors who want to stay in the county, but can't afford housing. Also, there is increased demand for employees earning at or slightly above minimum wage, who struggle to find housing.

As Jen Miller, HAND's executive director explains, this housing project is going to surprise you. It doesn't look like the stereotypical low-income housing project. In addition to the homes, there is an area for a community garden and a playground. You can tour the homes from 2 to 4 p.m. June 14 during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It's located between 105th and 106th streets west of Westfield Bouldevard in Carmel.

HAND is working with communities in Hamilton and Boone counties to find solutions. For more information about HAND or to make a donation, go to www.Handincorporated.org.
